Dag Beatrix!

April 30th...a national holiday that celebrates Queen Beatrix by partying in the canals, drinking beer, and being covered head to toe in orange. However, this year was especially important because Queen Beatrix is handing over the throne to her son, Willem-Alexander. From here on out, the holiday is to be known as King's Day, and will be celebrated on April 27th, Willem Alexander's birthday. The night before (or in our case, multiple nights before), everyone floods into the closest city center where there is live music, food, and of course tons of beer.

I feel like there is a striking similarity here...

The next morning we rallied to go to Amsterdam for the real festivities. But first we had to get there, along with the other thousands of people who were trying to take the train. When we got to the train station, we saw a train leaving with no one on it. Then we figured out that was there way of controlling how many people were flooding into Amsterdam at one time. To give you a visual, here is an aerial shot on Queen's Day from Nikken Digital Team.

So its no wonder that when a train came that they finally let people on, it was packed like a can of sardines jar of pickles (if you don't get that reference go watch Ellen Degeneres' stand up Here and Now...you won't be disappointed). I was praying no one had beans for breakfast because I don't think I would have made it if someone let one loose.

Once we finally arrived in Amsterdam we figured we earned some libations and were ready to celebrate Holland style!

King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima!

Naturally.

A single refrigerator in the canal.

Butt.

These bumble bees couldn't hang. Still don't know what the significance of their costumes was.

Taking a quick nap, brb.

We headed home early, around 7 p.m. because for some reason Abby and I thought it would be fun to have a 7 a.m. flight the next morning for a two week trip through Italy! By the time we got home around 10 p.m., I begrudgingly set my alarm (on my computer since still no phone) for 2 a.m. Italy here we come!
